BAYLISS, James

South Staffordshire. 10 October 1915

James Bayliss was born in Pensnett and was the son of Mrs Agnes Bayliss of 1 B Court, Chapel Street, Brierley Hill. He volunteered for the South Staffords in 1914 and went to the 8th (Service) Battalion which after home training was sent to the Western Front in July 1915 as part of the 17th Division. They were posted to the Ypres sector which, though quiet, was still dangerous through shelling. Probably as a result of artillery action Private James Bayliss was seriously wounded. He was taken to a Casualty Clearing Station where he died on the 10th October. He was 31 years of age and is buried in Lijssenthoek British Cemetery (I C 27A). He is commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
