BURGESS, Thomas

Worcestershire. 23 November 1915

Thomas Burgess was born and lived at Lyde Green, Cradley. He was an early volunteer for the Worcesters in 1914 and joined the 4th Battalion. He was with them in the dangerous landing on the 26th April but they had gained little more than foothold on this difficult terrain. The troops had to endure the extremes of temperature as well as the three exhausting battles of Krithia and trench warfare in the ravines and gullies of the Gallipoli terrain. Private Thomas Burgess was killed in action by a sniper on the 23rd November and is buried in Azmak Cemetery (II C 3). He is commemorated on the Cradley and Halesowen Memorials. His brother, Bert, was killed on the Somme in October 1916
