COATES, Joseph

Worcestershire. 06 August 1915

Joseph Coates was the son of Mr abd Mrs R, Coates of High Street, Woodside, Dudley. He was married but after his death his wife married again and was Mrs E M Guest of 99 Queens Cross, Dudley. He was an early volunteer for the Worcesters and joined the 9th (Service) Battalion. They were in training for nearly a year and were then sent out to Gallipoli to break the stalemate on the peninsula. They landed successfully on the 6th August and attempted to move off the beach. A few men were killed in action at this point and one of them was Private Joseph Coates. He Is commemorated on the Helles, Dudley and Woodside Memorials.
