CROCKETT, Arthur

Worcestershire. 04 February 1917

Arthur Crockett was the son of Mr and Mrs J. Crockett and was married to Alice of 4 The Cridden, Dudley Road, Lye. They had three children. Arthur probably served in the army before 1914 but volunteered for the Worcesters when war broke out. He served in the opening campaigns and experienced the retreat from Mons and injury at Ypres. He was transferred to the 9th (Service) Battalion and was sent out to Gallipoli. After the evacuation from Gallipoli they went to Mesopotamia in early 1916. They were unable to relieve Kut before it capitulated but the city remained the long term objective. The Worcesters attacked on the 25th January 1917 and suffered heavy casualties on terrain without cover. One of the casualties was Private Arthur Crockett who was seriously wounded and died of wounds on the 4th February. He was 35 years of age and is buried in Amara Cemetery ((XIII B 13) and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
