Charles Dainty lived at 75 Pedmore Road, Lye, and volunteered for the Worcester Territorials. He served in the 1/7th Battalion which went to the Western Front in April 1915. After training at Ploegsteert and then in the Armentičres sector they moved to the quiet Somme area at Hébuterne but, although there were no major attacks, the winter was severe and the shelling dangerous. On the 6th January Private Charles Dainty was killed in the front line when an enemy rifle grenade landed in the trench. He is buried in Hébuterne Military Cemetery (I J 14) and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
