DAVIS, Oscar J

Northumberland Fusiliers. 03 June 1917

Oscar Davies was born in London but might well have been living in Stourbridge by 1914. He was the husband of Madeline Davis, later of 22 Riley Road, Brighton. He enlisted in the Rifle Brigade but was transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers, being sent to the 13th Battalion in the 21st Division. Early in 1917 they were involved in following up the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line and in May fought in the second phase of the Battle of Arras. The fighting on the front died down at the end of May but there were still casualties from shelling. They included Private Oscar Davis who was killed in action on the 3rd June. He was 28 years of age and is commemorated on the Arras and Stourbridge Memorials.
