DAVIS, William Alfred

Worcestershire. 17 August 1917

William Davies was born at Rowley Regis and was living in 1914 with his wife, Fanny, at 32 Long Row, High Town, Cradley with their two children. He enlisted in the Worcester Territorials and joined the 1/7th Battalion who had been in the front line on the Western Front since the battle of the Somme in 1916. In August 1917 they were called upon to mount an attack for the second phase of the Third Battle of Ypres. On the 16th they attacked the ruined village of St. Julien and made some ground but Private William Davies was among those severely wounded. He was taken to a military hospital at Vlamertinge west of Ypres but he died of his wounds on the 17th August. He was 27 years of age and is buried in Brandhoek Military Cemetery No. 3 (II D 13) and commemorated on the Cradley and Halesowen Memorials.
