DUKES, Wilfred

Worcestershire. 06 August 1915

Wilfred Dukes was the son of Mr. M. and Mrs. E. Dukes, of 8, Nelson Rd., Dudley. He attended the Claughton School and enlisted in 1914 for the Worcesters. He joined the 4th Battalion who, on return from Burma, were sent to the Mediterranean to engage the Turkish Empire. They landed at Cape Helles on the Gallipoli peninsula on the 25th April but were unable to reach the main ridge. Reinforcements arrived to land at Suvla Bay on the 6th August and as a diversion the Worcester attacked at the village of Krithia. The Suvla Bay landing was successful but the losses at Krithis included Private Wilfred Dukes. He was 22 years of age and is commemorated on the Helles, Dudley, Netherton and Claughton School Memorials.
