FARLEY, Harold G

Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. 25 August 1916

Harold Farley was the son of Frank and Eliza Farley of 59 Cobden Street, Wollaston, but was born in Oldswinford. He attended Hill St. Council School. He enlisted somewhat unusually in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry and was posted to the 8th Battalion. As part of 26th Division they went to Salonika in November 1915, where an invasion of Bulgarian troops threatened the Greek frontier. British forces moved up towards Lake Doiran and in August a serious attempt was made to reach the town and lake. This was not successful and in one attack Private Harold Farley suffered severe chest wounds. He was taken to a military Hospital in Salonika where he died on the 25th August 1916. He was 21 years of age and is buried in Sarigol Cemetery, Greece (A 12) and commemorated on the Stourbridge, Wollaston church and Greenfields school Memorials.
