FOLEY, Edward

Sherwood Foresters. 18 September 1916

Edward Foley was the husband of Edith Foley of 137 Dudley Road, Harts Hill, Brierley Hill, and worked as a core maker at a local brick works. He volunteered for the South Staffords and joined the 7th (Service) Battalion. At some point he was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters and served in the 11th (Service( Battalion. They went to the Western Front in late 1915, spent some time at Ypres and then moved to the Somme. Their most serious action was the major attack on the ‘Quadrilateral’, a strong German fortification near the village of Ginchy., starting on the 15th September. Private Edward Foley was killed in action on the 18th September 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval and Brierley Hill Memorials.
