GREEN, Thomas

Welsh Guards. 10 September 1916

Tom Green was born in Brierley Hill and seems to have moved to South Wales. He joined the Welsh Guards, enlisting at Bargoed, and in 1916 was in the 1st Battalion on the Western Front. By September 1916 progress in the long battle of the Somme had reached the stage when it became necessary to attack the third German defence line. The Guards were sent forward to the front line near Morval but a major enemy counter-attack immediately took place on the 9/10th September and had to be stopped. They were successful but their losses were 10 officers and 195 other ranks in killed, wounded and missing. Among the dead was Private Thomas Green who is commemorated on the Thiepval, Brierley Hill, Brierley Hill church and Brockmoor Memorials.
