HUGHES, John

South Staffordshire. 15 February 1918

John Hughes lived at 19 Bell Street, Brierley Hill and was married with three children, one of whom served in the navy. He worked as a chimney sweep before the war and enlisted in the Staffords. He joined the 2/6th (Territorial) Battalion and in the Autumn of 1917 they were stationed near Arras. They moved to Mory near Cambrai to reinforce the success of the November 20th success but were caught in Bourlon Wood by a massive gas attack.. Private John Hughes was possibly one of those affected but it is more likely that he arrived in a draft to replace those lost as he had been on home leave in mid-January. Private John Hughes died of wounds on the 15th February 1918 and is buried in Mory Abbey Military Cemetery (III I 8) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill Church Memorials.
