JEWKES, William

Worcestershire. 04 November 1916

William Jewkes was born at 5 Churchfield Row, Dudley and volunteered for the Worcesters. He served in the 2nd Battalion which had suffered heavily in the 1914 campaigns and was then transferred to the 33rd Division. It was in action in 1916 when they fought at the start of the Battle of the Somme and at the end. There difficult operations at Albert and Bazentin in July and they returned to the front line for the final battle of the Ancre in the appalling conditions of November. Private William Jewkes was killed in action on the 4th November and is commemorated on the Thiepval and Dudley Memorials.
