JONES, Arthur

Sherwood Foresters. 21 March 1918

Arthur Jones was the son of Maria Jones of 76 Hill Street, Mount Pleasant, Kingswinford, and enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters. He was sent to the 1st Battalion in the 8th Division which had been fighting at Passchendaele in late 1917. The Foresters moved to St Omer in March 1918 in anticipation of the German 1918 Spring offensives and, when the first started on the 21st March, were sent to defend the line of the Somme. There were many casualties on that first day and they included Private Arthur Jones. He was 20 years of age and is buried in Roye British Cemetery (IV D 5) and commemorated on the Wordsley Memorial.
