JONES, Joseph

Royal Welsh Fusiliers. 20 July 1916

Joseph Jones was born in Llanymynech, a mining village in the Welsh county of Montgomery, and enlisted at Chester in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He joined the 2nd Battalion and entered front line service on the 4th May 1915.on the Western Front. They were transferred to the 33rd Division in preparation for the 1916 Battle of the Somme and attacked on the 1st July at Bazentin where early successes were made. Further advances were made towards High Wood but, as in all the other sectors, casualties were heavy and Lance Corporal Joseph Jones was killed on the 20th July 1916. He is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery (VII A 39) at Longueval and commemorated on the Dudley Memorial.
