KNOWLES, Joseph

Worcestershire. 26 February 1917

Joseph Knowles enlisted in the Worcesters and was sent to the 1st Battalion. In 1916 they had fought through the Battle of the Somme and at the start of January 1917 they started to follow up the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line. It was a defensive retreat and much care was needed especially in evacuated villages. A major attack was planned at Bouchavesnes for the 4th March but Private Joseph Knowles was killed during the preparation on the 26th February. He is commemorated on the Thiepval, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
