ROUND, Joseph

Worcestershire. 08 May 1915

Joseph Round was a pre-war regular soldier in the 4th Battalion of the Worcesters. The battalion returned home from India where they had been serving and joined the 29th Division. They were sent back east to capture the Gallipoli peninsula and force the Turks out of the war. They landed on the 25th April near Cape Helles without serious casualties but failed to break through the Turkish defences at the village of Krithia. The second attack was a general advance starting on May 6th. The battle was hard fought by both sides but the Worcesters were unsuccessful. On the 8th May Private Joseph Round was killed in action and is commemorated on the Helles, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
