SAULT, Wilfred Lowe

West Yorkshire. 12 April 1918

Wilfred Sault was born in Bilston but was living in Brierley Hill man when he enlisted in the West Yorkshire Regiment. He went to the 15th/17th Battalion, possibly after its amalgamation in December 1917. They had fought on the Somme in 1916 and at Arras in 1917. In 1918 they awaited the German Spring offensive which was launched on the 21st March. The battalion was at St. Quentin and forced back over the old Somme battlefield. They were then moved to the Lys front when the second German offensive started on the 9th April. Again they were forced to retreat and Private Wilfred Sault was killed in action on the 12th April. He is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial and on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
