SHAW, George

George Shaw was born in Lye and lived at 19 Lawrence Street, Stambermill. He volunteered for service, probably in 1914, and enlisted in the Worcesters. He joined the 4th Battalion on Gallipoli after the campaign against the Turks had become a stalemate. New forces arrived to extend the Allied position and, to assist their landing at Suvla Bay, the Worcesters led a major diversionary attack on the Turks at the village of Krithia on the 6th August. This was their third attempt to break through the Turkish defences at this point and it was another failure. Private George Shaw was one of over 700 casualties on this dire day, most of them killed in action. He was only 17 years of age and is commemorated on the Helles, Stourbridge, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
