SHILVOCK, John

Worcestershire. 24 August 1916

John Shilvock came from Halesowen and enlisted in the Worcesters. He went to the 3rd Battalion which was at Messines in the early part of 1916 and was then ordered to the Somme. They were in action after four days attacking the difficult Leipzig Salient opposite Thiepval. On the 16th July they attacked at Ovillers in an attempt to clear the village and after a month out of the line they returned for an attack on the 24th August on Thiepval village and its ruins. In this last attack Private John Shilvock was killed in action and is commemorated on the Thiepval and Halesowen Memorials.
