SIDAWAY, Stafford

Worcestershire. 03 September 1916

Stafford Sidaway was the son of Stafford and Amy Sidaway of 3 Lyde Green, Cradley, and attended Colley Lane school. He volunteered for the Worcesters and was sent to the 3rd Battalion. In the third stage of the Battle of the Somme the battalion was engaged in the fierce attacks on the powerful defences of the Leipzig Salient near the village of Thiepval. A major attack on the 3rd September resulted in the loss of the battalion commander and two company commanders. Among the others who died was Corporal Stafford Sidaway. He was 26 years of age and is buried at Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille (V H 2). He is commemorated on the Cradley and Halesowen Memorials.
