SLATER, Thomas A

Lincolnshire. 09 August 1915

Thomas Slater was the son of Tom and Sarah Slater of 61 Blackberry Lane, Hasbury. He volunteered for the Lincolns and joined the 6th (Service) Battalion. They were in training for nearly twelve months and were then sent to Gallipoli. On the 7th August they landed at Suvla Bay as reinforcements for the original force. There were few casualties at the landings but the attempt to move inland towards the key ridge dominating the peninsula met solid Turkish resistance. Private Thomas Slater was killed in action on the 9th August and is buried in Green Hill Cemetery (III C 17) and commemorated on the Halesowen Memorial.
