SWINGWOOD, George

Worcestershire. 10 August 1915

George Swingwood lived in Stourbridge and volunteered in 1914 for the Worcesters. He joined the 9th (Service) Battalion who were sent in June 1915 to Gallipoli where the initial attack had failed to capture the peninsula. They landed on the 6th August at Suvla Bay without opposition. And moved cautiously forward. The first major assault on the Turkish position opened on the 9th August but was a disaster with no ground gained and huge casualties. Private George Swingwood was one of those killed in action on the 10th August. He is commemorated on the Helles, Stourbridge and St. John's church Memorials.
