TAYLOR, George

Worcestershire. 16 June 1915

George Taylor was born in Birmingham and enlisted before 1914 in the Worcesters. He served in the 3rd Battalion and was probably in the Reserve when war broke out. The Worcesters were in the British Expeditionary Force stationed at Aldershot and crossed to France on the 12th August. They took part in the advance to Mons, followed by the retreat to the Marne. They then moved to Ploegsteert and at Spanbroek Mill in March 1915 provided a diversionary attack for the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. They moved to Ypres in May and took part in the major attack at Bellewaerde Ridge on the 16th June. The front line battalions stormed the first line of enemy trenches but the following Worcesters faced the main defences and lost many casualties. Among them was Lance Corporal George Taylor. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
