Harry Taylor was the son of Joseph and Eliza Taylor of 28 Attwood Street, Lye, and was married to Sarah of 48 Park Lane, Netherton, Cradley. He enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery and served as a driver in C Battery of the 55th Brigade, attached to the 13th Division. They went out to Gallipoli for the landings of 6th August1915 and after evacuation were sent on to Mesopotamia to continue the war against the Turks. After a year of frustrating failure the move up the Tigris was more successful in 1917. Kut was captured in February and Baghdad fell on the 11th March. The troops continued to advance and were at Nahr Kalis from the 9th April. It is likely that Driver Harry Taylor was killed there on the 13th April. He was 35 years of age and is commemorated on Basra, Cradley, Halesowen, Lye and Wollescote, and Lye church Memorials.
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
