TUBB, George MM

Machine Gun Corps. 21 September 1917

George Tubb came from Abingdon, Berks, to work in Brierley Hill Post Office. He lived at 39 John Street with his wife and child. He joined the Berkshire Volunteers and transferred to the Worcester Territorials in July 1916. He transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, probably when it was set up in 1916 and served in the 194th Company in the 23rd Division. At some point he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. In 1916 the Division fought at Messines in June and it was here that the Division first used the machine guns to cover a general advance. The technique was highly successful. In August they joined the British forces in the Ypres sector and in September were in front line action in the Battle of the Menin Road. This was a three Division attack close to the village of Gheluvelt, opening on the 20th September. It was a major success with serious enemy losses in killed and prisoners. Among the British troops killed in action on the 21st September was Corporal George Tubb MM who is commemorated on the Tyne Cot, Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
