WAINWRIGHT, George

Worcestershire. 14 September 1918

George Wainwright lived at 14 Ridge Street, Wollaston, and was an early volunteer in August 1914. Before the war he had been a gas fitter at Stourbridge Gas Works. He joined the 9th (Service) Battalion of the Worcesters which was sent to Gallipoli in June 1915 and then to Mesopotamia in 1916. In three and a half years' service he was promoted to Sergeant and had been wounded three times and twice torpedoed by submarines. By September 1918 the Turkish forces had been driven out of Mesopotamia and the Worcesters, after a great feat of endurance, reached the Caspian Sea and Baku. In the last battle of the campaign on the 14th September Baku was taken with light casualties. However, one of the few killed was Sergeant George Wainwright. He was 25 years of age and is commemorated on the Teheran, Stourbridge and Wollaston Memorials.
