WYNN, William

King's Royal Rifle Corps. 24 August 1916

Wiliam Wynn was born in Lye and was living in Stourbridge when he enlisted. He joined the KRRC and served in the 9th Battalion in the 14th (Light) Division. They saw their first action in Flanders at Hooge and Bellewaerde during 1915 and then moved to the Somme sector. In the long Battle of the Somme in 1916 they were in the front line for the battle of Delville Wood during August. This was fiercely defended by the German forces and, although they were eventually driven out, it took several attacks and was achieved only with high casualties. Among those killed in action was Rifleman William Wynn who died on the 24th August. He is commemorated on the Thiepval, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
