John Allden’s career in the army lasted 34 years. He served in the Volunteers and then in the 5th Battalion of the South Staffords Territorials. He received the Volunteer Decoration and served as Lieutenant Quarter-Master of his Battalion. He did not go on active service during the Great War but his experience was very useful in the rapid expansion of the Territorial Force in 1914. He died on the 24th June 1918 at the age of 62 years. There is a fine memorial to him in St Michael’s church and he is commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
