ARNOLD, William

Royal Fusiliers. 05 April 1918

William Arnold lived at 16 Angel Street, Kates Hill, Dudley. He enlisted in 1916 in the West Surreys but was soon transferred to the Royal Fusiliers. He went to the 13trh Battalion in the 37th Division. who fought on the Somme in 1916. Arras in April 1917 and in the Third Battle of Ypres. In March 1918 the Fusiliers were faced by the first German Spring offensive in the Somme region. They came into action when the enemy attacked on the river Ancre on the 5th April. Casualties were severe, although the German forces were held up in the dash for the Channel. Private William Arnold was killed in action on the 5th April and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and on the Dudley and St. John's, Kates Hill, Memorials.
