Harry Bell was the son of Amy Buckle of 38 High Street, Brierley Hill, and stepson of Frederick William Bell. He attended the Claughton School in Dudley and volunteered for the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment and joined the 1/7th (Territorial) Battalion. They went to the Western Front in March 1915 and joined the 2nd Division. They were stationed in the flat and open ground near Givenchy and in May were involved in the battle of Festubert. It was not really a success and was followed by active trench warfare. Raids, bombing and tunnelling were attempted and enemy artillery were very active. Private Harry Bell was wounded at some point and died of wounds on the 4th July 1915. He was 21 years of age and is buried in Cambrin Military Cemetery (C 25) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill, Brierley Hill church and the Claughton school, Dudley, Memorials.
