BOXLEY, Joseph

Hampshire. 09 February 1919

Joseph Boxley lived in Cradley and enlisted in the Hampshire Regiment and served in the 1/4th (Territorial) battalion. They were sent to Mesopotamia early in the war and were caught up in the siege of Kut. where the garrison was forced to surrender. When Joseph Boxley reached this unit is not clear but he was transferred to the 2/7th Battalion which eventually fought its way from Basra to Baghdud and the Perisian frontier.. Disease, however, was endemic and it is likely that Private Joseph Boxley died in hospital at Amara on the 9th February 1919. He was buried at Al Amara Cemetery (XII K 11) and is commemorated on the Cradley and Halesowen Memorials.
