BROOKES, George

Worcestershire. 18 August 1917

George Brookes was born in Quarry Bank and was living at Cradley in 1914. He enlisted in the Worcesters and joined the 4th Battalion. In 1916 they fought through the Somme and in August 1917 the battalion was involved in the Third battle of Ypres. On the 16th the major battle of Langemarck opened but, although another push towards the Passchendaele ridge was achieved, the battalion lost over a hundred casualties. Among those killed in action was Private George Brookes who is buried in Dozinghem Cemetery (IV B 7) and commemorated on the Cradley and Halesowen Memorials.
