Royal Navy HMS Good Hope. 01 November 1914

William Cartwright lived at High Side, Dudley and served in the Royal Navy. In 1914 he was a Royal Marine Gunner in HMS Good Hope, a Drake class armoured cruiser of 14,000 tons launched in 1901. She had been placed in the Reserve Fleet in 1913 but was sent to the 6th Cruiser Squadron just before August 1914. When the German East Asiatic squadron started to attack British merchant shipping in the Pacific, she was sent to reinforce Admiral Cradock's Atlantic Squadron. This rounded Cape Horn into the Pacific to meet the German force but in the Battle of Coronel off the coast of South America on the 1st November Good Hope was sunk with the loss of all 900 crew.
