John Sidney Cheshire was the son of the Revd. W. Cheshire, later of 14 Oxford Road, West Bromwich. He was born in Driffield in Yorkshire and had studied at Bristol and gained an Inter B.Sc. He was living in West Bromwich when he enlisted in the Royal Engineers. His link with Halesowen is unknown but it is possible that he worked in the town. He served on the Western Front with the 1st Battalion Special Brigade which dealt with gas. He moved from that operation to being a Pioneer. He was killed in action on the 25th June 1916, a week before the opening of the Battle of the Somme.
