Arthur Clay was the son of Arthur and Mary Clay of 43 Olive Lane, Blackheath. He volunteered for the Worcester Territorials and joined the 1/7th Battalion.is commemorated on the Blackheath and Halesowen Memorials. They went to the Western Front in March 1915 and after front line experience in trenches near Ploegsteert they went to the Somme in 1916 for the long battle that started on the 1st July. They were in the series of attacks on Ovillers and on the difficult Skyline trench and losses were high. Lance Corporal Arthur Clay was killed in action on the 19th July and is commemorated on the Thiepval, Blackheath and Halesowen Memorials.
