Charles Fowkes served in the Royal Navy as a stoker. His last vessel was HMS Conflict, a destroyer built in 1894. It was in reserve in 1914 and was possibly a training vessel. Stoker Charles Fowkes died on the 29th November 1918 in Haslar Royal Hospital, Gosport, probably as a result of pneumonia, and is buried in Cradley churchyard. He is commemorated on the Cradley and Halesowen Memorials.
