Wiliam Green was the oldest son of Mrs Green of 92 Dudley Road, Lye, whose three sons died in the Great War. John Green enlisted in the Worcesters and joined the 9th Battalion who fought in the Gallipoli campaign and were then transferred early in 1916 to Mesopotamia. They were unable to relieve Kut before it capitulated but this city remained the objective. Forces were built up and the decision was made to advance to Kut and Baghdad. The Worcesters attacked on the 25th January and suffered heavy casualties while advancing over terrain without cover. One of those who died was Private J. William Green who was killed on that day. He is buried in Amara War Cemetery (XIX E 12) and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials. Clifford was killed on the 19th October 1915 and Thomas on the 22nd August 1918.
Commemorated at:
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
