Basil Harper was the son of Albert and Mary Harper of 51 New Street, Hasbury, and volunteered for the Worcesters in 1914. He joined the 4th Battalion and went out to Gallipoli with the original expeditionary force. The Worcesters landed on the beaches without serious casualties and three days later attacked the Turks in force at the village of Krithia. They failed to break through the enemy lines and among the heavy casualties was Private Basil Harper. He was 20 years of age and is commemorated on the Helles and Halesowen Memorials.
