HINGLEY, William Geoffrey Neville

Worcestershire. 03 July 1916

Geoffrey Hingley was the elder son of William and Ellen Hingley of ‘Woodcroft’, High Street, Amblecote. After schooling he worked with his father in the glass trade. He volunteered for the Worcesters in September 1914 and joined the 10th (Service) Battalion who went to the Western Front in 1915. For the 1916 battle of the Somme they were in the second line on the 1st July and went into the attack on La Boisselle on the 3rd. It was a very difficult task and casualties were high. Private Geoffrey Hingley was killed in action on this day. He was 20 years of age and is commemorated on the Thiepval and Amblecote Memorials.
