Charles Holloway attended Halesowen C of E school and enlisted in the Worcestershire RegimentRoyal Engineers. Before long he was transferred to the 181st Tunnelling Company. Tunnelling in suitable conditions started soon after trench warfare had been established and was carried out by those with a background in mining. The 181st Company was in the area of Arras, notably Ronville, from the Spring of 1917. It is not known how Private Charles Holloway died but many tunnels were being prepared for the Battle of Arras which opened on the 9th April. They were to enable the troops to pass under no man's land before the start of the advance. He was 31 years of age and is buried in Agny Military Cemetery (E 12), now in the suburbs of Arras, and commemorated on the Halesowen and Halesowen C of E school Memorials.
Commemorated at:
High Street, Halesowen, West Midlands B63 3BB ?
