George Jewkes was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Jewkes, of 1 House, 4 Court, Cross St., Dudley, He volunteered for the Worcesters and joined the 9th (Service) Battalion. After a considerable period of training the Worcesters joined the reinforcements for the Gallipoli campaign. The landing at Suvla Bay on the 9th August was success but they could not reach the dominating ridge. Close fighting in the gullies and scrub on the slope of the ridge was inconclusive and both shell-fire and sniping took their toll. On the 15th October Private George Jewkes wa killed and he is commemorated on the Helles, Dudley and St. James church, Dudley, Memorials. His brother, Joseph, in the 4th Worcesters situated hardly a mile away died a day later.
