McCARTHY, Gerald Edgar

London Regiment.

Gerald McCarthy was the son of Martha and Eugene McCarthy of 4 Plant Street, Wordsley. He enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment but was transferred to the 2/22nd Battalion of the London Regiment in the 60th (London) Division. They went to Salonica in 1916 and to Egypt in 1917 for the Palestine campaign. He probably took part in the successful Battle of Gaza in early November which prepared the way for the capture of Jerusalem. However, he was seriously injured and taken to a military hospital in Port Said where he died of wounds on the 16th November 1917. He was 22 years of age and is buried in the Port Said Memorial Cemetery (F 4) and commemorated on the Wordsley Memorial. His older brother, Horace, also died of wounds and is buried in Wordsley churchyard.
