NEWEY, John E

Worcestershire. 26 September 1915

John Newey was the son of William and Annie Newey of 22 Bishop Street, Kates Hill, Dudley, and his wife was Hannah living at 2 Bishop Street, Kates Hill. He volunteered in 1914 and joined the 2nd Battalion of the Worcesters, together with his brother, William. This was a regular Battalion snd was already on the Western Front near Armenti?res and had been in action since Mons. They fought at Festubert in May 1915 and in the Battle of Loos on the 25th September. No ground was gained, losses were high and Private John Newey was killed in action on the 26th. He was 37 years of age and is commemorated on the Loos, Dudley and St. John's. Kates Hill Memorials. His brother was killed at High Wood on the Somme on the 24th August 1916.
