PAGE, Noah

Worcestershire. 19 April 1916

Noah Page was born in Brierley Hill and was living there when he volunteered for the Worcesters. He went to the 9th (Service) Battalion and was sent out to Gallipoli in 1915. The original landings had turned into a stalemate which the new landings could not break. After the evacuation of the peninsula the 9th went to Mesopotamia to continue the war with the Turks. This was an equally difficult campaign up the Tigris in 1916. Rapid action was essential to relieve the British garrison surrounded at Kut and the troops pushed up the river Tigris to face Turkish trench lines flanked by the river and the desert. Direct assault was attempted and succeeded at Fallahiya but two further efforts failed and Kut had to surrender. Corporal Enoch Page was killed in action on the 19th April in the action at Bait Isa and he is commemorated on the Basra, Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
