Samuel Prosser was lived in Brierley Hill and enlisted in the Worcesters before 1914. He was in the 2nd Battalion stationed at Aldershot as part of the British Expeditionary Force. By the 12th August they had landed in France and moved to Mons. After facing overwhelming enemy forces they were obliged to retreat from Mons 150 miles to the Marne. After the crucial September Battles of the Marne and Aisne the line stabilised. However, another strong German army attacked in Belgium with Ypres as the target. The BEF moved hurriedly to its defence and arrived on the 15th October. On the 21st the Worcesters advanced to attack the German forces at Langemarck. It was a hard fought day but the Germans were only briefly halted. Among those killed in action on this day was Private Samuel Prosser. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial and also on the Brierley Hill, and Brierley Hill church Memorials and the Delph District Roll of Honour.
