Herbert Roberts was born in Buckpool and in 1917 was living at 46 Vicarage Road, Amblecote, with his wife, Nellie, and son. He was employed as an ironworker by Messrs. S Newton & Sons and then volunteered for the Worcesters. He was sent to the 4th Battalion and was wounded twice in the 1916 Battle of the Somme. The first was during the opening battle at Beaumont Hamel and the second in the contest for Gueudecourt in October. He was seriously wounded and sent to a military hospital in Worcester. Lance Corporal Herbert Roberts died of his wounds on the 1st February 1917. He was 24 years of age and is buried in Amblecote churchyard and commemorated on the Amblecote Memorial.
