Fred Saunders was a regular soldier in the Worcesters who had lived with his parents at 78 Lower High Street, Stourbridge. He had served with the 4th Battalion in India for about two years. When war came, the battalion stayed in India until early 1915. The troops came back to Britain and then joined the 29th Division which was sent to the Dardanelles in the campaign against the Turks. After landing on the 25th April they suffered heavily in the three battles of Krithia. The terrain of wooded ravines and bare hill tops gave strong advantages to the Turkish defenders. Private Fred Saunders died on 19th June a few days after the Worcesters had put in another attack. He was 23 years of age and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. His name is not on the Stourbridge Memorial.
