SHERIFF, Horace Victor

Horace Sheriff was born in Brierley Hill and was the son of Samuel Sheriff. By 1914 he was married to Mary Maria and living in 2 Victoria Street, Brierley Hill. He enlisted at Wolverhampton in the Artillery Territorial Force and was sent to the 286th Brigade to serve in B Battery. In 1917 they were in Artois near Armentières when major attacks were taking place on Vimy Ridge and near Arras. In counter-battery fire he was killed instantly by a shell. Bombardier Horace Sheriff was 28 years of age and is buried in CitBonjean Military Cemetery, Armentières, (VIII B 2) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
