SLATER, Joseph

Worcestershire. 06 August 1915

Joseph Slater lived at Silver End, Brierley Hill and attended Brockmoor Council school. He volunteered for the Worcesters in 1914 and joined the 4th Battalion who were part of the original invasion force in the attack on Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915. They failed to break through the Turkish defences at the village of Krithis or to reach the commanding crest of the ridge . Reinforcements were sent out and these landed at Suvla Bay on the 6th August. As a diversion the Worcesters attacked the village of Krithia for the third time. The landing was successful but the Worcesters failed to take Krithia, The cost was heavy and among those killed in action was Private Joseph Slater. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial and on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
